William J ("Mac") McDonnell, 85, passed away peacefully September 17th surrounded by his loving family. Born in Scranton July 26, 1935 to the late Francis and Helen McDonnell. He is preceeded in death by his brothers, Phillip and Francis Jr.
He is a graduate of South Catholic High school, earned a degree in accounting from the University of Scranton, and proudly served in the United States Army.
A Certified Public Accountant for over 40 years, Mr. McDonnell co-founded the firm McDonnell & Smith, and later established his firm McDonnell and Associates. He served on various local government and Lackawanna County boards.
Over his lifetime, he was an avid skier and enjoyed playing golf, racket ball, tennis, going for hikes with his beloved dog Quincy, biking, and other outdoor activities.
He was a member of the Friendly Sons of Saint Patrick and never missed an annual dinner. He was also a season ticket holder of the Scranton-Wilkes-Barre Red Barons.
He is survived by his wife, Angelo Musto McDonnell of 57 years and their five children: William Jr. and wife Patricia (Jeffersonville); their four children, William III, Nicole, Ryan, and Matthew; Maria and Michael Giesing (North Stonington, Conn.); their two children Jessica and Joseph; Patrick and Heather McDonnell (Wallingford, Conn.); their three children Jack, Mae and Cole; Christopher McDonnell and Erica Comine (Scranton), and his two children Patrick and Aidan; and Sean McDonnell (Philadelphia); and his sister-in-law Nancy Musto who visited him weekly.
The family wishes to express their deepest gratitude to Riverside Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center and the CNA's, Nurses and staff for their exceptional care during his stay.
Family and Friends are invited to a viewing Wednesday from 9:00 to 10:15 a.m. at Mary Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church, 316 Williams Street Scranton. Mass of Christian burial will follow at 10:30 a.m. Social distancing, masks and capacity restrictions will be observed. Internment will be private at Mt Olivet Cemetery. Arrangements, Neil W.
