Dennis J. Gavigan, 79, of Moosic, died peacefully Thursday, February 20th at Geisinger Community Medical Center after a brief illness. He is survived by his devoted wife of 54 years, the former Kathleen Gallagher. Also surviving are a brother, David; two sisters-in-law, Rosa Fe Gavigan and Mary Gallagher; and numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and their families. He was preceded in death by his brother, James; sister, Lois DeGennaro (Patrick); sister-in-law, Theresa Gavigan; as well as brothers-in-law, Joseph Gallagher (Lois) and Jack Gallagher.

Born in Dupont and raised in West Pittston, Dennis was the son of the late James and Helen Lokuta Gavigan and a member of Divine Mercy Parish.

A graduate of St. John the Evangelist High School in Pittston, Dennis served in the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Enterprise and the USS Constellation. He was employed by Verizon for 32 years and, in retirement, worked as a test proctor for PSI Examination Services. He was a jack of all trades who could fix any plumbing, carpentry, or electrical problem he encountered.

Dennis had a strong sense of humor and made friends wherever he went. He departed from this world leaving behind a legacy of warmth and kindness. He walked through life with a gentle strength touching the lives of everyone he encountered with an unforgettable grace. He also enjoyed spending time in Rehoboth Beach with Kathleen and friends. An animal lover, Dennis had many beloved cats over the years and was a strong supporter of Roxie's Place Cat Rescue.

Dennis's family would like to thank Dr. Kishori Veerabhadrappa, and Dr. Kenneth Sebastianelli for their kindness and compassion, as well as the staff of Visiting Angels, who took such excellent care of him during his final illness.

The funeral will be Saturday at 10:30 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph's Church, 312 Davis St, and will be celebrated by Rev. Paul McDonnell, O.S.J., pastor. Interment of cremated remains will follow at Cathedral Cemetery. Those attending the mass are asked to proceed directly to the church.

Friends may call Friday, from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made by check to Roxie's Place Cat Rescue, 354 Freytown Road, Covington Twp, PA 18424.
