Grace McGovern

Grace McGovern, Pre-arranged Funerals, Neil Regan Funeral Home, Scranton, PA

Grace McGovern, 87, of Moosic, died Monday at home with her daughters by her side. She was the widow of Edward McGovern Jr., who died in July of 2008, shortly before their 50th wedding anniversary.

Born in Scranton, Grace was a daughter of the late Karl and Mary Benson Harrington and a member of Divine Mercy Parish. A graduate of Scranton Technical High School, Grace worked for 25 years for Harper Collins Publishers prior to her retirement.

Grace loved cooking, baking and was an avid Notre Dame fan. Her family was her world, and she loved spending time with them whenever she could—especially on holidays, Sunday dinners and summer family vacations in Ocean City, Md.

Surviving are two daughters, Patricia Furdin and Judy McGovern; two grandchildren, Kelly Stranz and husband, Matt; and Corey Furdin and wife, Brittany; three great-grandchildren, Jack, Ryan and Teddy Stranz (Grace was also awaiting the birth of her first-great-granddaughter); a sister, Carol Sassong; and three sisters-in-law, Margaret Stahl, Judy Kazista, and Helen Hilborn and husband, Rob.

She was also preceded in death by three sisters, Mary Grasso Solomon, Helen McNally and Alice O'Neill Gorman.

Grace's family would like to thank Kim Hart for her friendship and incredibly warm-hearted care prior to Grace's entering hospice care, as well as the staff of Hospice of the Sacred Heart, especially Erin and Samantha, for their kind and compassionate care during her illness.

The funeral will be Monday with Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Divine Mercy Parish at St. Joseph's Church, 312 Davis St., to be celebrated by the Rev. Paul A. McDonnell, followed by interment in Cathedral Cemetery. Friends may call Sunday, 2 to 4 p.m. at the Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. Those attending Mass on Monday should proceed directly to the church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 100 William St., Dunmore, 18510, www.hospicesacredheart.org; or Divine Mercy Parish.
