John F. Wentland

John Wentland, Pre-arranged Funerals, Neil Regan Funeral Home, Scranton, PA

John F. Wentland, 85, of Scranton, died Jan. 19 at Regional Hospital of Scranton. His wife of 62 years is the former Catherine Dunning.

Born in Scranton, son of the late Edward and Marie Jaroszewski Wentland, he was a member of St. Paul of the Cross Parish in South Scranton. John attended South Scranton Junior High School and was in the 109th Infantry Regiment. Before retirement, he was a painter.

John was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and proud to be a great-grandfather. An avid runner, he loved Lake Scranton. He also enjoyed his riding lawnmower, woodworking and keeping the street clean. He spent many hours with Kay creating draperies. He cut, pressed, pinned and bagged their creations. While he threaded about a million needles for Kay, she would never let him sew. He was a great team worker, working side by side with Kay. He enjoyed installing their work and talking with the clients. Everyone knew they were one.

Also surviving are his sons Jay; and Joseph and wife, Carol; three grandchildren, Joseph and wife, Kelly; Shannon; and J.R. and fiancée, Devin Zombeck; and great-grandson, Eamon; two sisters, Romayne Serafin and Audrey Blackledge; a brother, Joseph Wentland; nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Leona Conger; a brother, Michael Wentland; and great-grandson, Finley.

The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul of the Cross Parish at Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, 1217 Prospect Ave., celebrated by the Rev. Scott Sterowski, pastor. Interment will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at Neil W. Regan Funeral Home Inc., 1900 Pittston Ave. Expect delays, as capacity restrictions are in place. Masks must be worn by all guests. Those attending the Mass on Friday are asked to proceed directly to the church.
